Australia Updates English Test Rules for Visas: New Tests and Score Changes from August 7

If you are planning to relocate to or stay in Australia for an extended period, the English language test requirements for visa applicants are undergoing major changes. From 7 August 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs will expand its list of approved English language exams and revise minimum score requirements.

The goal is to create a consistent system across different testing formats, ensuring that results accurately reflect equivalent levels of English proficiency.

Newly Approved English Language Tests

Starting from 7 August 2025, applicants can submit results from these newly recognized tests, valid for 36 months from the exam date:

CELPIP General

Widely used in Canada, this computer-based test assesses everyday English in work and social contexts. It covers Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing in one sitting, with results available within 4–5 business days.

LanguageCert Academic

Designed for academic and professional contexts, this test measures real-life language skills and is available in both paper-based and online formats.

Michigan English Test (MET)

Commonly used in the United States and Latin America, the MET evaluates general English proficiency for work and study purposes. It is available as a four-skill test online or at designated centres.

Revised Score Requirements for Existing Tests

Australia is also updating score thresholds for popular exams such as:

  • TOEFL iBT
  • PTE Academic
  • C1 Advanced
  • OET (Occupational English Test)

Note: The C1 Advanced exam will no longer be accepted for visa categories that require only Vocational English.

Minimum Scores for Competent English

Applicants must meet the minimum score in all four skills—Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. Here are the updated requirements:

Exam Speaking Listening Writing Reading
IELTS 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0
PTE Academic 54 47 51 48
C1 Advanced 179 163 170 163
TOEFL iBT 19 16 19 16
OET 330 290 290 310
CELPIP General 7 7 7 7
LanguageCert Academic 70 57 64 60
MET 48 56 57 55

What This Means for Visa Applicants

These changes offer more flexibility, allowing you to choose a test that matches your strengths and preferred format—whether online, paper-based, or centre-based. However, the minimum score requirements have been adjusted, making preparation more important than ever.

Remember, test results must be no more than 36 months old at the time of visa application.

Conclusion

Australia is broadening its approved English test list while slightly raising the bar for certain exams. Select your test strategically, prepare thoroughly, and ensure you meet all updated requirements to avoid delays in your visa process.
