Starting August 1, 2025, the United States Embassy in New Delhi will no longer allow third-party passport pickups. If you have applied for a U.S. visa, you must collect your passport in person. Friends, agents, or representatives will not be permitted to collect it on your behalf.

Reason for the Change
The decision aims to improve the security of passports and related documents. The embassy noted that concerns have grown in recent years about security risks associated with third-party pickups. The new rule is designed to ensure that passports do not end up in the wrong hands.
Who Must Collect the Passport
All visa applicants must collect their documents in person.
For applicants under 18, a parent or legal guardian may collect the passport on their behalf, but only with an original, signed consent letter from the parents. Scanned or emailed copies will not be accepted.
Alternative: Home or Office Delivery
If traveling to the collection center is not convenient, applicants can opt for home or office delivery. This service costs $13.70 per applicant. To use this option, log in to your profile on the U.S. visa portal and update your delivery preferences.
How to Update Delivery Preferences
- Log in to your profile on the official U.S. travel documents website.
- Go to “Document Delivery Information” on the Visa Application home page.
- Select the applicant’s name.
- Choose your preferred delivery method.
- Save changes and log out.
If you encounter issues, use the “Feedback/Requests” button in your profile and include a screenshot of the problem along with your desired delivery address.

What Not to Do
Do not call the help desk to request delivery changes—the embassy requires all updates to be made online. For further updates or details, check the “Messages” section in your visa application account.
Key Points for Travelers
- In-person collection is now the default.
- Children’s passports require original parental consent letters.
- Home or office delivery is available for a fee.
- Always plan ahead to avoid last-minute issues.
Why This Matters
For decades, passport collection in India often relied on agents or third-party services. This change removes that option. While it adds another step for travelers—tourists, students, and business visitors alike—it significantly reduces the risk of passports being mishandled.
