Biometrics are obtained for every International citizen between the ages 14 and 79 making an application for asserting or demanding temporary residence in Canada exempting United States citizens, PR, or refugee safety. Biometric data permits Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to promote identification management and boost safety by reviewing the candidate’s identity against criminal and relocation history in Canada. Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) obtains the following data from a candidate at a biometric pool service point:
- Biographic Information: This includes a candidate’s name, birth date, and other confidential information, as mentioned on the biographic information page of the candidate’s passport or trip records.
- Ten Fingerprints: The candidate’s fingerprint is electronically captured during the biometric pool section using an electronic fingerprint tool.
- Photograph: A digital image of the candidate.

Those Required to Provide Biometric
If you are 14 and 79, you must offer your biometrics. Temporary residence candidates are required to provide biometrics if they are making an application for:
- A study permit or continuation of a study permit
- A work permit or continuation of a work permit
- A repair of temporary resident status
- Temporary resident permit
- A prolongation of approval to stay in Canada as a temporary resident
- A temporary resident visa
PR candidates are required to offer biometrics if they are making an application for:
- A PR visa
- An application to stay in Canada as a PR
- A new PR card for the first time in situations where they were excluded from biometrics registration since they were under the age of 14 years at the period of their request.
Refugee safety assertions are required to offer biometrics if they are making application for:
- An in-Canada asylum assertion
- An abroad refugee resettlement assertion
It is essential to understand that candidates who are qualified to make an application for electronic travel approval do not need to offer their biometrics if they are going on a trip to Canada as a tourist.

When the Applicant is Approaching 14 or 80 Years Old
Due to section R12.2(2) of the IRPR (Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, the condition to offer biometrics is due to the candidate’s age on the date the request was carried out. So, candidates who were 13 years old when their application or demand was presented but became 14 years old by the time the application was obtained by Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada need to provide their biometric data. Comparably, candidates who are 80 years old are required to offer their biometric data if they were 79 years or younger during the time their request was carried out.
Where Biometrics are Obtained
Candidates are needed to submit themselves individually at a biometric pool service point. These service points comprise of:
- Choose the port of entry
- Visa application centers
- Choose United States application aid centers
- Choose service Canada sites
- IRCC visa offices in restricted cases
- Choose Global Affairs Canada sites
Fees for Executing Biometrics
The processing payment for biometrics are:
- Family rate at $170
- Single rate at $85
- Team of performing artists at $255
The biometric payment must be paid whenever a candidate offers biometric data unless they are excluded from fee payment. PR candidates are needed to register their biometrics with each request. Candidates are not required to make payment of biometrics fees again if, as an aspect of the same request, they are needed by an official to repeat the biometrics pool.
What the 1 in 10 Policy Means
Described as the “1 in 10 approaches”, subsection 12.7(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulation (IRPR) offers a temporary exclusion from the conditions to offer biometric data to assist a subsequent request for temporary residence, which includes a request for the temporary resident visa, temporary resident status, study permit, temporary resident permit or work permit.
To qualify for the exclusion, the candidate must have formerly offered biometrics to assist a temporary resident’s request or possess a pending PR request, and they are required to present the new proposal within ten years of the date of biometric registration.
