How To Prolong Your Stay In Canada As A Student

After an international student acquires a study permit, they may be required to prolong or modify the permit during their studies in Canada.

A study permit expires 90 days after the expiration of a study course. If you conclude your course before the date on your study permit, you will be able to make an application to prolong your visit as a student. If you conclude your studies on time, your study permit will cease to function 90 days after that, notwithstanding the initial date on your study permit.

Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recommends students apply to prolong their study permit at least 30 days before their present permit ceases. Hence, they advise applying more than 30 days before expiration to record any hesitations or other problems you may undergo.

If you are studying in Quebec, you may as well be required to acquire a new Certificate D’acceptation Du Quebec, the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ). Being a common law, if you need a study permit, you also need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate.

If Your Study Permit Has Not Expired Yet

Suppose you present a request for continuation, modification, or prolongment before the present status ceases. In that case, you are regarded to be on “Maintained Status” as a temporary resident until Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada has made a judgment on your application.

If your status expires before Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) determines your application, you can only continue studying as long as you stay in Canada. Retaining lawful status in Canada through this procedure is very essential. You must only reach the time of your permitted remain in Canada after applying for an alteration in status.

If Your Study Permit Has Expired

If you have not made an application to prolong your study permit and it finally expires, you have forfeited your status in Canada. You can not proceed or begin your studies until Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has fixed your status and allocated a new study permit. You possess 90 days to make an application to restore your status and prolong your permit.

There is a $200 payment to restore your status and a $150 payment for the new study permit. If you intend to travel outside Canada, ensure you possess the travel papers required to re-enter Canada. You must have accurate travel papers to come back to the nation.

If You Applied For A Different Permit

If you were a student and applied for a work permit rather, you are not authorized to keep studying while awaiting a judgment on your work permit request. Also, you can not get employed until Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada endorsed your request.

Hence, you are authorized to remain in Canada as a temporary resident (visitor) until you obtain a conclusion on your application.
